THE NIAGARA RIVER — NEW YORK & ONTARIO
Last Monday morning I saw my 5th dentist of this “tooth journey” & he installed a temporary crown. It would take over a week (& $950) for the permanent crown, so we decided to wait on that until we get to
Tennessee this fall….My mouth feels pretty good, a little tender still, but I’m so glad to be out of dentist’s offices for a while.
Being in Youngstown has been such a joy for both Hank & me. Last night we had dinner at the yacht club & said goodbye to Jude & David who lent us their car & their home while they were away for the 4th weekend (Thank You!) and also to Melanie & Gary who gave us new boat cards that Melanine designed & printed (Thank You!). I especially was glad to spend time with my dear friend Heather – it’s always emotional when we have to say goodbye to each other. This morning we took a short trip up the Niagara River with Heather, Don, & Jordon (a new friend who’s on her way to a new life in San Francisco – that’s another story); then we fueled QAR in Youngstown, said goodbye to our friends & traveled across the river to Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario.
We tied up at the dock; Hank went in to register us at the yacht club & 2 customs agents drove up. It was like they were expecting us. Hank still had to call in to customs & after answering lots of questions, we were given our permit number for the time we’ll be in Canada. The agents then boarded us & gave the boat a cursory search. We declared all our liquor & we were over by a bit, but they didn’t charge us (we appreciate that). Canada has very high taxes on liquor & tobacco & even higher if you bring it in over 1.5 liters per person.
We walked to The Anchorage Restaurant for lunch (Hank used to eat there many years ago when he worked for C&C Yachts & commuted to NOTL). Afterward we walked up to the main street of town which hasn’t changed since we were last here about 25 years ago. It’s a lovely village – filled today with many tourists. NOTL is famous for its Shaw Festival, beautiful flowers, local shops, great hotels & inns, & good restaurants.
We highly recommend that anyone who wants to visit a beautiful part of the world travels to Youngstown, NY & Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario.
Tomorrow we travel 24 miles across Lake Ontario to Toronto & the Royal Canadian Yacht Club.
